[FIC] Anniversary

Because Starry wanted to find some fic and I didn't feel like traversing the Pit.

Category: Ryuusei no Rockman/Megaman Starforce
Characters: Subaru (Geo) and War-Rock (Omega-Xis)
Rating: PG
Genre: Friendship
Summary: "Hope Akane never makes my favorite food. What does she think I am, the family pet?" Inspired by a humorous quote from the dub!version of Starforce 3. Subaru x War-Rock friendship.

Anniversary

War-Rock seemed unusually grumpy at breakfast that morning.

"Eh...? What's wrong, War-Rock? Breakfast too hot or something?"

"Wha-? No, it's perfectly fine, kid." Breakfast was always perfectly fine.

That's how it always was. Akane was a good cook (and it helped that all of these Earth foods were novel to an alien like him), but things did start feeling mundane time after time, especially since the meals were on a planned, repeating schedule.

It didn't help that today was Subaru's favorite day of the week-"Breakfast for dinner" day. Which meant that they were eating the same thing tonight.

War-Rock couldn't help but wonder why the family never thought to ask what his favorite food was.

------

War-Rock felt kind of lonely sitting in the Hunter that evening. Usually Subaru would be working on homework and War-Rock would be peering over his shoulder, hindering the boy more than helping with his constant inquiries of what this was and what that was and why the hell would he need that.

Sometimes Subaru would give him a look that read of both amusement and exasperation before explaining, other times he would ramble on and on about the subject before War-Rock would have to remind him to get back to work (and the boy would never fail to laugh at the irony of War-Rock, the hyperactive, always energetic and go-and-get-'em alien being the one to tell the calm, usually serious child to focus and work).

But that night, Subaru said he had to ask his mother for something-and had left the Hunter in his room, leaving War-Rock to his own lonely devices.

War-Rock never really realized how much time his time on Earth was spent in Subaru's company until they were apart. It was like they were joined at the hip; at first by necessity so the alien could hide, but it grew more into familiarity, and soon, an outright friendship and preference for each others' company.

The time apart wasn't really that long, but it felt like a long time to the alien-turned-Wizard, as he soon materialized himself out of boredom and messed with the kid's stuff. When the boy came back, it was to find him staring through the telescope into space.

"Oh, War-Rock...! You've been awfully quiet today...anyways, dinner's ready!"

Subaru bounded out of the doorway before War-Rock had a chance to respond. He seemed awfully energetic...of course. It was his favorite dinner, after all. War-Rock followed...into complete darkness.

"Eh...kid? What's up with the lights? Bust a bulb or somethin-"

"SURRRRRPRIIIIISEEEEE!!!!"

And suddenly his world erupted into an explosion of color and sound.

"W-what the-?!" It didn't take much for War-Rock to be surprised, but this certainly got him. He didn't get why the dining table was set up to look like a party...

"What, you don't know, War-Rock?" Subaru laughed from in front of the table, where a small feast was (and it certainly didn't look anything like Breakfast-For-Dinner...). "It's the anniversary of when we first met!"

"Anni-...wha?"

"Anniversary, War-Rock," Subaru corrected, striding towards him with a grin. "We celebrate it once a year. One year ago, today, we met. So we're celebrating the anniversary of that!"

War-Rock was left speechless (for once).

"All that for..."

"Oh, come on, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise, right? Things have changed so much since we've met...and I wouldn't trade it for the world, War-Rock! You're my friend!"

And at that, War-Rock couldn't repress a grin,  nor could he stop himself from lopping an arm around the boy's shoulders.

"Likewise, kid." He wandered over to the table eying its contents with curiosity.

"I've never had an anniversary before, kid."

"I guessed. We just celebrate and have a good time and take the time to remember what we treasure about what we're celebrating."

"Well, that's easy! It's the bond between us, kiddo! What else is there-kiddo, what is that."

"...what's what, War-Rock?"

"That. In the middle of the table. Next to the cake."

"Oh, that...? Those are rice balls, War-Rock! Remember when we first met? The only thing I could sneak to you from dinner was a rice ball like those...I asked mom to make those specifically for this dinner and helped her make them! I thought it would be interesting, you know, eating the same thing you did when we first met...you don't like them?"

"No, not that, kid, it's just..." At this, War-Rock devolved into full-blown laughter for a long moment before finishing his reply.

"Rice balls...those are my favorite!"

"R-really...?"

"Yeah...hehe. That were my first food on Earth, you know? And you gave it to me! That's good enough reason, eh?"

Subaru chuckled in return as he handed War-Rock a knife to cut the celebratory cake with..

"Of course, War-Rock...happy anniversary."

"Yeah, happy anniversary, kid."
